Delta-8 Info & FAQs

What is Delta-8 THC?

Delta 8 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the numerous (over 100) cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Delta-8 THC is not to be confused with the main form of THC that is most talked about.

In almost all cases, when people talk about tetrahydrocannabinol, they are referring to Delta-9 THC. However, delta 8 THC, while sharing a similar structure and properties with the main THC, features certain differences.

Is Delta-8 THC Legal?

As of the January 2021 final report from the USDA, the new cannabinoid Delta-8 is now legal. As laws are ever changing please check with your local & state laws before purchasing Delta-8 products.

How is Delta-8 Made?

There are two major ways by which delta-8 THC is derived.

  1. Naturally: when delta-8 THC forms organically through the oxidation of THC. It is subsequently extracted and processed into different delta-8 THC products.
  2. Synthetically: manufacturers convert cannabidiol (CBD) to delta-8 THC through a process called isomerization. This allows them to produce delta-8 THC in commercially viable amounts.

When purchasing delta-8 edibles, it is almost entirely certain that the delta-8 THC was synthesized from CBD.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are the class of unique, naturally-occurring chemicals found in cannabis plants. Besides cannabinoids, there are also flavonoids, terpenes, and other chemicals in cannabis. However, these others are not unique to cannabis in the way cannabinoids are. Some of the most popular cannabinoids include (delta 9) tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), etc.

Of all these, (Delta-9) THC is the primary cannabinoid found in the cannabis plants, especially those of the marijuana strains. Hemp strains of cannabis are cultivated for their very low concentration of THC (not more than 0.3%, legally). Hence, hemp plants are rich in another cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD), which is deemed non-psychotropic.

What Differentiates Delta-8 & Delta-9?

The chemical difference between delta-8 THC and (delta-9) THC is down to their atomic bonds. However, unlike delta-9 THC, delta-9 THC is not a direct result of cannabinoid-synthesizing enzymes in the cannabis plant. Instead, delta-8 THC is what you get when (delta-9) THC is oxidized. This inevitably happens over time when delta-9 THC is stored for a long period. This explains why cannabis flowers tend to reduce in potency when stored for a lengthy time.

According to the National Cancer Institute, delta 8 THC is “an analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties.” Basically, delta 8 THC is a lower version of (delta-9) THC. They share some equal properties, such as binding to CB1 receptors in the body. However, in general, delta-8 THC is of lower potency.

How Available is Delta-8 THC?

It should also be noted that most research into cannabis focuses more on delta-9 THC than delta-8 THC. Therefore, while the latter definitely has some unique health benefits, the jury is still out concerning its role in the acclaimed entourage effect of cannabis compounds. In any case, delta 8 THC is usually only available in very tiny amounts (less than 1%) in cannabis plants. Therefore, it is easier to purchase delta-8 full-spectrum products than isolates. Nevertheless, distillate delta-8 THC is fairly readily available.

In its distillate form, delta-8 THC is not any different from any other distillate CBD product, with its liquid appearance being thick and semi-transparent. The most common method of administration of delta-8 THC distillate is vaping (with the usual e-cigarette vape pens or dab rigs). However, there are also delta-8 THC-infused tinctures, meant to be applied subsequently. Direct oral use is not recommended due to limited research.

Generally, caution is advised when consuming a delta-8 THC product. The fact that it is less potent than regular THC is not an excuse to overdose on it. The rule of thumb is to start very small and gradually work your way up to your tolerance threshold.

What are Delta-8 Gummies?

Delta-8 THC gummies are like normal CBD gummies in appearance. However, they do not necessarily have the earthy taste associated with hemp. The advantage of delta-8 THC gummies over other methods of consumption such as vapes and syringes is that they provide easier dosing. With a preset amount of delta-8 THC in a gummy, you can just chew away, day or night.

Another important point regarding delta-8 THC gummies is that, unlike CBD gummies, it is not unusual for them to contain other ingredients. Therefore, you should read labels for the complete list of ingredients before making a purchase.

While gummies sure do ensure a more straightforward approach to dosing, moderation is highly necessary. Avoid using the excuse of the reduced potency of delta-8 THC to take more than usual. Though modestly when compared with THC, delta-8 THC is still psychoactive. The best approach is always to start with small doses and slowly increase the amount until you hit the desired amount without adverse effects.

Conclusion

It should be noted that research into delta-8 THC is growing but still limited. And from what is known, delta-8 THC retains the psychotropic properties of delta-9 THC, albeit in reduced potency.

Therefore, a safer alternative to these two is cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is still the subject of growing research, but there are different corroborating studies attesting to its wellness properties and also to the fact that it is not psychotropic nor addictive. Besides, CBD can be legally consumed federally in the United States, unlike THC.

These reasons (legality and safety) are why CBD is the primary content of all our products at Organa Hemp USA. More importantly, our hemp products are cultivated organically, thereby guaranteeing purity and 100% natural satisfaction. And further, all our products are lab-tested and GMP-qualified.
